Charlie McVeigh’s Draft House has finally crossed the river, securing a fifth site on the smoking hot corner of Charlotte Street & Goodge Street. The former Northumberland Arms, at 43 Goodge Street W1, has been watering Fitzrovians since the early 1800s.
The Draft House will open in July and aims to continue that tradition, dispensing the very finest cask and keg beers, accompanied by established Draft House classics such as foot-long scratchings and hamburger specials The Yolk, The Smoke and The Poke.

Gillray’s Steakhouse & Bar is the latest entrant to the contest to create “London’s Best Steakhouse.” Housed in County Hall, over the Thames from the Houses of Parliament, this latest combatant aims high.
“We’ve heard a lot of rhetoric – particularly from Hollywood’s celeb chefs – over the last few months about how the Steakhouse was invented in America and is therefore intrinsically superior,” commented General Manager Theresa Maw. “They’ve set the bar pretty high – but we think we can jump over it. In particular we can offer something that they just can’t – our Englishness.”
Launching this Spring, Gillray’s makes no attempt to ape a New York style grill. “We have this fantastic setting; diners will be able to see and hear Big Ben, plus walls decorated with cartoons from archetypal political cartoonist James Gillray all combined with a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere, welcoming and expert service,” comments Ms Maw. “We have also deliberately taken on board that far more women are eating steaks these days. Perhaps because of regimes such as the Dukan Diet the days when a steakhouse was recognised as men-only are over. We even have ladies-sized portions.”

Open on select weekdays from April 4 to 17, the three-in-one art gallery, cinema and dining lounge will showcase the works of BA Great Britons who were mentored by Richard E Grant, Tracey Emin and Heston Blumenthal.

This spring sees a welcome new addition to the South Kensington restaurant scene as exciting Asian eatery Umami opens its doors on 14 March.
Ideally located on Cromwell Road, Umami will offer a creative and authentic menu of both small and sharing plates, with influences from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea.
Served in two sizes, to taste or to share, tapas-style dishes will include perennial favourites such as chicken satay and Thai fish cakes alongside signature creations like sweet basil, garlic and peppercorn tossed squid.
