The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF) has announced that America’s top food and beverage companies have exceeded their goal of reducing 1.5 trillion calories in the marketplace in the United States. This announcement comes three years after a 2010 commitment by the HWCF, and its 16 food and beverage corporate partners, to the First Lady’s Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) to reduce calories by 1.5 trillion by 2015.

Nestle USA have unveiled its new "Balance Your Plate with Nestle" education campaign to help consumers build nutritious, convenient meals. The announcement was made during a luncheon presentation at the Consumer Federation of America's 36th Annual National Food Policy Conference.
The goal of "Balance Your Plate" is to help consumers enjoy the foods they love, while encouraging the consumption of more fruits and vegetables. By providing tips and tools, the campaign shows how individuals and families can quickly assemble high-quality balanced meals using frozen prepared entrees as the "center of the plate."

Lidl has launched a trial 'Healthy Till' in each of its 600 stores this week by replacing 'treat' items such as chocolate with products of a higher nutritional value like multivitamin juice and fresh fruit. The initiative is being trialed for an initial 10-week period in order to assist parents in making a considered choice when purchasing their goods. Should the customer response prove positive, it will be rolled out as a permanent fixture.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' annual Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE) took place last week, new research from ConAgra Foods, Inc., one of North America's leading food makers, shows that what you add to your diet can be just as important as what you remove.
"Americans are tired of hearing about diet recommendations that focus on foods to avoid," says Kristin Reimers, PhD, RD, Nutrition Manager, ConAgra Foods. "Eating should be an enjoyable experience, which is why we are excited to present these research findings that encourage people to stop thinking about foods they shouldn't be eating and, instead, focus on foods that help to enhance a healthful lifestyle."

It may not make chocolate one of your five a day - but scientists have found a way to replace up to 50 per cent of its fat content with fruit juice.
University of Warwick chemists have taken out much of the cocoa butter and milk fats that go into chocolate bars, substituting them with tiny droplets of juice measuring under 30 microns in diameter.
